Carl Edge Board Build
assembled by MOW from posts at Swaylocks
How hard could it be? First wave I paddled into- I pearled so bad, I kissed the reef. Wonderful... second wave- dorky little shoulder, my friends are beginning to wonder. Third wave. Drop in, grab rail, and proceed to get SLOTTED OUT OF MY MIND! Hooked. Once I got the take off figured out, and where to sit on my board, I was having a blast. Getting barrels on 3 foot waves- so far back that I never thought I was coming out. So, I started dabbling a little- started looking around on the internet, discovered that there is a surprising amount of info out there... Then I stumbled across this website: www.flexspoon.com ...Being the compulsive human that I am- I had to make one. Flexspoon- I love your website! Discovering it was the reason I embarked on this project. Any tips you might have to add, feel free!
Here's a sample of what he's cranked out in a couple of days. He's stoked!
eps blank made of scraps
template and rocker taken from board on flexspoon.com, computed in and printed out
glassed (this is a plug for a mold)
bondo
ready for primer
primed
painted
More from Carl. This is the mold going over the plug (1-2), then popped off. He's providing details and answering questions back on Sway's.
...because at this point of the board construction, I'm pretty much just making it up as I go. I have been using www.flexspoon.com as my main reference point.
Another feather in G2's cap
That would probably be Dr S's edge board thread.
so i thought edgeboards wernt supposed to flex much in its length...just on the edges...so is this just a spoon with the edge bottom????
Get a hold of The Surfer's Journal, Spring 1994, Vol. 3, No. 1, the article, "George Greenough, The Ageless Artist", by Paul Gross. It has a section dedicated to edge boards in Greenough's development that is the ultimate explanation. It will take a few reads but it will answer all your questions. In fact, when you're done you'll feel like an expert. That's the sign of a good teacher, and Paul is.
I would love to see that article! If you have a copy is there anyway I could get you to photocopy and send it to me? PM me via swaylocks. Thanks -Carl
I go away for a few days and look what happens!
Glad to see Carl's project is advancing so well(and fast) and man'o war is doing his thing to spread the news.
"Ageless artist" is the best and only explanation of spoons development and function I have ever read. Plus Paul was there, remembers everything and puts it all into words so well.
Carl - between what Paul wrote in the Greenough mold article and ageless artist you will get most of the knowledge there is about Greenough edge boards.
Only use a leash if
1. your spoon will be destroyed if it gets away from you
2. you will be destroyed if you have to go in and get it
Greenough had leash on his spoon above because both 1 and 2 could happen at the place(s) he was surfing. When I looked at surfing there I realized I would want a leash(with a quick release).
is that a bat-tail flexspoon????i recognise it from the latest surfline portfolio....
Basically done, and hoping to get it into the water in a week or two.
Heavy uni-directional, then 6 oz strips over it
More uni
9 lbs
3/8" original -- base thickened to 7/8"
Here it is, ready for a test. The orange is temporary.
He knows he's going to be grinding.
If you see an orange flash at Moss Landing, you'll
know who it is.
Nice work, Carl. Thanks for documenting.
